Why I Hunt - Title

Why I Hunt

The crisp mornings of the deep woods in the Ozark Mountains in Central Arkansas are what I live for in the muggy afternoons of the Summer. I find myself literally aching for them during the last long hot stretch from the end of August through September, so much so, that by the time that first morning of hunting season arrives I could careless if I kill a thing.

There is this perception among those who do not hunt that all hunters care about is the kill. I know a lot of folks who hunt, and this perception is almost never the case especially here in Arkansas.
I have pondered over the years why a lot of people buy into the perception that hunters are cold hearted killers hell bent on the destruction of all the woods “Bambi’s”. I admit my table is blessed several times a year by the “Bambi’s” of the woods and make no mistake it always tastes better with fried taters and gravy.

The truth is though, there are so many reasons I hunt and every one of them outweigh any reason not to:

I hunt because coffee never tastes as good as it does it at sunrise on a crisp morning with my son beside me.

I hunt because the smell of the woods and chatter of the squirrels is heaven in my soul and God at my side allowing me the freedom to enjoy his creation in its most glorious moments.

I hunt because I like knowing my families’ survival isn’t dependent upon anyone else’s skills but my own.

I hunt because I like the connection I have with my kill in their final moments on this plain, where I get the opportunity to properly thank them and thank God for their last breath without having to hide the reality of their existence behind Styrofoam and plastic wrap. There is nothing in a grocery store as natural and organic as what I am able to put before my family at meal time and that is sacred to me.

I hunt because water and woods beat out steel and concrete any day of the year. I think hunting and fishing creates a more well rounded individual who has a deeper, closer feel for the natural world, which is a lacking concept in this day and age.

I hunt because I know that when I was growing up, a day spent in the woods with my father taught me more life lessons than a year in a classroom ever could, that still holds true today.

I hunt because lets face it guys, we don’t know what the future holds. I can not say at this moment that my family’s future is secure in the world we live in as it is right now and I am not comfortable raising my children in a world where they are defenseless against the darkness that infects so many with its destruction. I hunt because I want my family to survive whatever the world throws at them, even if that means they never “have” to hunt again.
